In his previous rather troubled incarnation, Superman was not able to hit the long-term financial targets which Warner Bros executives had expected of him. Their Kryptonite turned out to be disillusioned filmgoers and mixed critical reviews rather than cryptic chemicals from far off galaxies. While ‘Man of Steel’ was released in 2013, and grossed $667 million after the film production had cost $116m, Warner Bros chiefs were not amused. Warner Bros CEO Kevin Tsujihara had set the bar very high. Marvel’s Black Panther, released in 2018, starring the late Chadwick Boseman, had grossed a staggering $1.4 billion, and Warners Bros bigwigs had expected the Kal-El to fly over this figure with ease as he soared towards the sun.
